Porsche Trick or Speed - On Dracula’s Trail

Description

People have been sharing spine-chilling tales at Halloween for centuries, and there’s one particularly terrifying character that has been familiar to children through the ages: the bloodthirsty Count Dracula. But is the story fiction or reality? Adventurer Sebastian Canaves traces the steps of the famous vampire in Romanian Transylvania. More than a hundred years have passed since British writer Bram Stoker unleashed his Gothic novel about Dracula, an undead soul who leaves his grave every night to hunt for human blood. Since that time, the vampire count has been considered one of the world’s most feared beings.Stoker’s tale was inspired by the historical figure of 15th-century Wallachian prince Vlad III, also known as Drăculea, a name traditionally thought to derive from his father’s membership of the aristocratic Order of the Dragon, and possibly meaning “Son of the Dragon” – or even “Son of the Devil”.And it’s not just a name that the two figures have in common. Vlad III retains a reputation as a fearsome commander with a predilection for cruel rituals: bloodthirsty, apparently invulnerable, and responsible for countless atrocities during the Middle Ages... So how much truth is there in the Count Dracula story?

  • Porsche Top 5 - Superlative speed

The Porsche Top 5 series turns its attention to speed. Episode two sets out to resolve the question of all questions: which of the sports car manufacturer’s models is the fastest?#5 Porsche 911 Turbo S. The first to appear is the Porsche 911 Turbo S – a sports car that masters the balancing act between everyday driveability and breathtaking acceleration. Its 3.8-litre turbo horizontally opposed engine in the rear produces 580hp. Speeds of over 300km/h are no problem for this high-performance athlete.#4 Porsche Carrera GT. The 911 is subsequently overtaken by none other than the Carrera GT. Its 612hp V10 engine accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in a mere 3.9 seconds, emphasising the racing genes of this legendary super sports car. It is also the first standard-production vehicle whose monocoque chassis and subframe are made entirely of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP).#3 Porsche 959 S. For the next candidate, we take another step back in history: the Porsche 959 S. In the mid-1980s, the Porsche 959 was the first model to be nicknamed “super sports car”. The reason: a 2.8-litre six-cylinder horizontally opposed engine made the 959 the world’s fastest sports car. The 959 S took this to yet another level. The 29 units produced generated even more power - up to 515hp.#2 Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The next nominee brings spectators back to the present day: the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. This two-time Nürburgring-Nordschleife record-holder is pure motorsport for the road, and also demonstrates its strengths on the long straights. The 700hp slumbering within its 3.2-litre horizontally opposed engine catapult the driver from 0 to 100km/h in just 2.8 seconds.#1 Porsche 918 Spyder. In the lead, however, is another record-holder. The 918 Spyder shows just what its combined hybrid power of 887hp can achieve. With an acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in only 2.6 seconds, it’s no surprise that the 918 Spyder wins this Top 5 ranking.

  • Porsche helps European bicycle land speed record to be broken

"Neil Campbell becomes the fastest European ever on a bicycle, achieving it in the slipstream of a Porsche Cayenne Turbo. The record attempt took place at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire. Forty years after Jean-Claude Rude attempted to set a new speed record behind a Porsche 935 Turbo, Neil Campbell used the slipstream of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo to beat his own record of 135 mph, set in June. Supported by a loyal team of volunteers, to set the record took stamina and immense strength on Campbell’s part, as well as two specially selected machines. Campbell’s bicycle was created by Cheshire-based Moss Bikes, designed to be incredibly strong and stable at speeds of up to 200 mph. Formed from a mix of carbon fibre and 3D printed parts, it has interchangeable gears, a wheelbase that’s much longer than a conventional bicycle and tyres specially rated for the purpose."
