The next generation of Windows is here: Microsoft officially released Windows 10 on Wednesday, making the new operating system available to download as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users. Windows 10, which Microsoft first previewed in late September, is a sort of hybrid platform: Executives say it combines the "familiarity" of classic Windows with the tablet-optimized features of 2012's Windows 8. Microsoft is hoping the addition of some old-school Windows features will help convince users to switch to Windows 10 -- and for the first time, the company is offering the new Windows as a free upgrade through the first year after its release, as the company announced in January.
Windows 10 is great. Windows 10 is everything Windows 8 should have been, addressing nearly all of the major problems users had with Microsoft’s previous-generation platform in one fell swoop. But there’s something you should know, Windows 10 is also spying on nearly everything you do. By default Microsoft is able to see your location, keystrokes, browser history, and even listen to you through your own microphone. Luckily, Microsoft does allow all users to opt out of any of these new "features.

When Windows 10 launches on July 29, pay special attention to the default desktop background. Microsoft partnered with San Francisco designer Bradley G. Munkowitz, whose worked on films such as Tron, to create a spectacle out of the desktop background. Microsoft used lights, projectors, camera mapping and even a fog machine to create a 3D-looking Windows 10 logo. It's quite a departure from the rolling hills landscape of Windows XP's iconic background.
Windows 10 arrives this summer. A Mashable reviewer says after years of problems with Windows 8, Microsoft is finally getting its act together with its upcoming operating system. Windows 10 will be available as a free update for all users with official Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 licenses until July 29, 2016. Users who don't have a previous Windows license will have to pay for a fresh copy of Windows 10.
