Diana, Philip: More Complicated Than The Crown

Description

Episode 2 of The Crown season 4 sets up a truly delicious dramatic scenario: a long, weird weekend at Balmoral Castle during which the royal family is visited not only by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson), but also by Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin), Prince Charles's new girlfriend and future wife. The episode is named "The Balmoral Test," a reference to the long-rumored royal initiation which newbies are subjected to at the Queen's estate in Aberdeenshire. Diana creates a strong first impression at dinner, mostly by being charmingly meek and self-deprecating, but the real test comes the following morning, when Prince Philip takes her out on a hunting expedition.

  • Princess Diana Royal Motherhood

In The Crown season 4, Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) takes center stage for the first time in the lavish dramatization of the inner workings of the royal family. While the series focuses on the courtship of Prince Charles and then-Lady Diana Spencer and the ultimate breakdown of the Wales's marriage, viewers do get a glimpse into what drove Princess Diana’s life: motherhood. And while the 10-episode season draws on historical truth for its portrayal of the royal family, it's important to remember that, as creator Peter Morgan has pointed out, the series is not a documentary and many of the scenes are reimagined for dramatic effect.

  • Diana, Camilla's Lunch From The Crown Really Happened

"Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded." Those infamous words, spoken by Princess Diana in her bombshell 1995 interview with the BBC's Martin Bashir, are embodied beautifully in a memorable scene from The Crown season 4. The season's third episode, ironically titled "Fairytale," explores the aftermath of Charles's proposal to Diana, and Diana's transition from a normal life with roommates in London to a lonely, gilded existence in Buckingham Palace. Charles is MIA for most of the episode, leaving his 19-year-old fiancée to fend for herself.
