An Asteroid Twice as Close as Most Satellites Flys By Earth

Description

An asteroid the size of a car made one of the closest passes to Earth ever seen, before rambling on back into space Tuesday. Asteroid 2017 GM was discovered late Monday by the Mount Lemmon Observatory in Arizona and then made its closest pass a few hours later at a distance of around 10,000 miles. "It is among the 10 known asteroids making the closest approach ever," Italian astrophysicist Gianluca Masi wrote in a blog post Tuesday.

  • NASA says spaceship successfully deflected asteroid in test to save Earth

NASA says it has succeeded in deflecting an asteroid in a historic test of humanity's ability to stop an incoming cosmic object from devastating life on Earth. The fridge-sized Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) impactor deliberately smashed into the moonlet asteroid Dimorphos on September 26, pushing it into a smaller, faster orbit around its big brother Didymos, says NASA chief Bill Nelson in a press conference from Washington. • Huge asteroid to skim past Earth

A huge asteroid called 2014-YB35 is set to skim past Earth on Friday.Asteroid 2014-YB35 is believed to be 1,000 meters wide, the same as the height of the Kingdom Tower currently under construction in Saudi Arabia.Travelling at more than 37,000 kph, the asteroid will barely miss Earth, according to a trajectory map released by NASA.At its closest point, it will be 2.8 million miles away from Earth, about 12 times the distance between Earth and the Moon.It is estimated that a collision with the asteroid would result in an explosive force equivalent to 15,000 megatons of TNT, which would trigger earthquakes and tsunamis and cause destruction on a global scale.
