The model-specific design features of the BMW X3 M, BMW X4 M and Competition models are geared squarely to the functional requirements of a high-performance car. The exterior's highly distinctive appearance makes no secret of the performance-focused character coursing through the SAV and SAC models from BMW M GmbH. The large intakes at the front end ensure an effective supply of cooling air for the engine, transmission and brakes. Meanwhile, the signature M design elements at the front, sides and rear serve to optimise aerodynamics and have been carefully matched to the power unit's performance characteristics and the chassis' tuning. The hugely potent engine of the BMW X3 M, BMW X4 M and Competition models, their chassis - underpinned by expertise in the development of racing cars - and perfectly balanced aerodynamics combine to create the type of thrilling all-round performance package for which BMW M cars are renowned. An ergonomically efficient cockpit design, sports seats and a wealth of modelspecific design details give the cabin of the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M an extremely sporty yet luxurious feel. The raised seating position helps to provide a superb view of the road ahead. And the M-style design of the displays and controls makes it easier for keen, sporty drivers to stay focused on the job in hand.
The in-line 6-cylinder engine in the BMW X3 M Competition and BMW X4 M Competition now features the forged lightweight crankshaft of the BMW M3 and M4 models. Its extremely torsion-resistant design enables transmission of the particularly high torque, while its low weight and reduced rotating masses also benefit the engine’s revving power. The in-line 6-cylinder engine’s racetrack-proven cooling system is designed to enable an exceptionally high level of output and includes two laterally positioned radiators in addition to the central one. There is also an additional engine oil cooler and a separate transmission oil cooler. BMW M GmbH motor racing expertise is also evident in the design of the oil supply system, which is geared towards dynamic racetrack operation. The engine’s weight-optimised oil pan has two separate chambers and an integrated suction channel. An additional suction stage enables the map-controlled oil pump to deliver lubricant from the smaller oil sump, which serves as a volume buffer. In this way, a reliable oil supply is guaranteed at all times, even during extreme longitudinal and lateral acceleration.
The appearance and standard equipment of the BMW X4 M40i and BMW X4 M40d are based on the corresponding X3 models and, like these, have typical BMW M insignia such as the specific BMW M kidney grille with chrome frame, double kidney grille slats in black high-gloss and the M logo as well as the aerodynamically optimized M exterior mirrors in high-gloss black. The rear apron with the anvil-shaped insert is fitted with air curtain panels in high-gloss black. Similar to the BMW X3 M40i and BMW X3 M40d, the free-form tailpipe trims are in black chrome with the two "teeth" and the tires.

Its predecessor - the first ever Sports Activity Coupe at the premium end of the mid-size class - broke new ground and now the all-new BMW X4 is writing the next chapter in this story of success. Its vehicle concept, which fuses the hallmark features of a BMW X model with the sporting elegance of a coupe, has also proved an instant hit in this class. Approximately 200,000 units of the first-generation X4 have been sold around the world since the original model was launched in 2014. The all-new BMW X4 underscores its individual character with significantly enhanced driving dynamics, standout exterior design accentuating the car's sporting instincts, a further refined premium ambience in the interior, state-of-the-art driver assistance systems and leading-edge connectivity technologies. Added to which, the dynamic and extravagant aura of the Sports Activity Coupe is further highlighted by the addition of two BMW M Performance models to the line-up: the all-new BMW X4 M40i and all-new BMW X4 M40d.
