Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations reveals the latest version of its armoured Range Rover Sentinel, which now features more power, unparalleled refinement, all-terrain capability and the latest in occupant protection.The 380PS 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 petrol engine gives a 40PS power uplift over the V6 petrol fitted previously, ensuring the armoured SUV retains exceptional Range Rover performance across all terrains. Carrying more than one tonne of armour plate and glass, Sentinel will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 10.4 seconds (0-60mph in 9.8 seconds), with top speed limited to 193km/h (120mph).Designed and engineered by Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, and built at the SV Technical Centre in Warwickshire, the armoured Sentinel provides peerless occupant security with world class comfort. At its core is a protection cell built to stringent whole vehicle standards and in accordance with full ballistic and blast certification*. The enhanced body is engineered to face modern and unconventional forms of attack, including improvised explosive device (IED) fragmentation blasts.
Range Rover’s modern luxury performance flagship, the 635PS mild-hybrid Twin Turbo V8 Range Rover Sport SV, recently proved the stopping performance and durability benefits of its optional Carbon Ceramic Braking system by completing a two-week track driving event at the Algarve International Circuit, on a single set of brake discs and pads.All four of the Range Rover Sport SV EDITION ONEs used on track at the undulating 4.6km Portimão grand prix circuit in Portugal featured the optional Carbon Ceramic Braking system with SV-exclusive Brembo Octyma calipers and 440mm front brake discs, the largest in the automotive industry.On average, each car covered 215 laps of the 15-corner circuit, adding 987km to the 1600 kilometres they had already covered before the event started.When inspected after the drive event, the brake pads for the Carbon Ceramic Braking system still retained around 30 per cent of their usable pad life.Every lap on track included multiple heavy braking zones, particularly into the first right-hand Corner 1 which saw Range Rover Sport SV EDITION ONE slowing from speeds of up to 241kph into the downhill braking zone, generating in excess of 1.1G – a figure it can also exceed in steady-state lateral acceleration during cornering, even on standard-fit all-season tyres.The Carbon Ceramic Braking option also saves 34kg unsprung mass versus the standard Dual-Cast Brakes, which enables even more responsive handling, improved acceleration and enhanced ride quality.

A dizzying 99 turns and 999 daunting steps didn’t stop the new Range Rover Sport PHEV from completing a world-first at one of China’s most famous landmarks. The petrol-electric performance SUV has become the first vehicle to climb the stairs to the natural rock arch of Heaven’s Gate. The challenge began at the bottom of the legendary 11.3km Tianmen Mountain Road (known as the Dragon Road). The showroom standard Range Rover Sport P400e took on the demanding course, with Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Ho-Pin Tung behind the wheel and the Terrain Response 2 system in Dynamic mode. At the summit of the road, the Formula E driver optimised Terrain Response for the second part of the challenge, conquering the towering 45-degree staircase of 999 steps leading to China’s legendary Heaven’s Gate using a combination of Ingenium petrol and electric battery power.
