DNA On 'Survey' Envelope Helped Police Crack Cold Murder Case, Arrest 82-Year-Old

Description

All it took was a licked envelope for Wisconsin police to arrest 82-year-old handyman Ray Vannieuwenhoven for murder. According to Newser, Vannieuweenhoven allegedly murdered a young couple on a camping trip in 1976. The octogenarian has been charged with the deaths of David Schuldes and Ellen Matheys. Schuldes got shot in the neck with a .30-caliber rifle and Matheys was raped and shot twice in the chest at a Wisconsin camp ground. Investigators were baffled, but semen was kept from the crime scene. The DNA was cross-checked with a genealogical database. After ruling out his two brothers, police got Vannieuwenhoven to lick an envelope in order to return a survey on area policing. The man has pleaded not guilty, but has a history of violence towards teen girls.

  • Public DNA Database Leads To Cold Case Killer

In 1999, 23-year-old Jennifer Watkins was found, her body wrapped in plastic, in the stairwell of the hospital where she worked. Now, Colorado Springs police report her sexual assault and murder has finally been solved, thanks to DNA collected at the scene. Newser reports that thanks to the help of a public genetic genealogy database, cold case investigators were led to Ricky Severt. Although Severt died in a car crash in 2001, familial DNA collected from his surviving relatives shows Severt cannot be excluded as the prime suspect. Both Watkins and worked at the same hospital. And while Severt cannot be brought to justice, police are sure they've finally found their man. After all these years, we are grateful to finally give Jennifer Watkins’ family the answers they deserve. Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski
