French Police Fire Tear Gas As Protesters March Toward EU Parliament In Strasbourg

Description

According to a report by Reuters, on Saturday, French police fired tear gas to push back protesters marching toward the European Parliament building in Strasbourg, in the 24th consecutive weekend of protests against President Emmanuel Macron's government. The “yellow vest” protesters returned to streets across France two days after the president outlined policy proposals including tax cuts worth around 5 billion euros in response to the long-running, highly publicized protests. Around 2,000 demonstrators gathered near European Union institutions in Strasbourg, with organizers hoping to make the protest international by marching to the parliament building in the buildup to EU-wide parliamentary elections. Reuters reports that authorities banned protests and barricaded the neighborhood where the parliament and other EU institutions are located.
