Russia Questions Future Of Syria Chemical Weapons Inquiry

Description

Russia is questioning the work of a joint investigation that is looking into who is responsible for chemical attacks in Syria. The Joint Investigative Mechanism, or JIM, was unanimously created by the 15-member U.N. Security Council in 2015 and granted an extension in 2016. Russia contends that there are serious issues with the work of the JIM, and thinks the UN needs to see the next JIM report, due on October 26, before assessing if the mandate should be extended once again. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said last week that renewing the mandate of the JIM should be the Security Council’s top priority. Some U.N. diplomats said that a draft resolution could be put to a vote before the next JIM report is submitted. A resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes by Russia, China, the United States, Britain or France in order to pass.

  • Russian 'Bear' Armored Vehicle Can Withstand Explosions and Chemical Weapons

Russian armored vehicles are some of the best in the world, and they just keep getting better. This is the updated model of a special armoured vehicle in service in the Russian Armed Forced called the 'Medved', or 'Bear', and Ruptly got a chance to see it taken for a test drive in the Nizhny Novgorod Region on Wednesday. The upgraded Bear can take hits from explosive rounds, mines, and even chemical weapons attacks. Designed by special request from Russia's Interior Ministry, the 12-tonne vehicle transports troops and weaponry both in urban and off-road conditions during counter-terrorism operations, riot control or territory defense missions. The VPK-3924 'Medved' is a Russian-made Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, meaning it can provide protection against chemical and special agents, as well as guaranteeing anti-ballistic protection for the crew when the vehicle is attacked by fire from a distance exceeding 16 feet or when a non-shatterable explosive device packed with 15 pounds or less of TNT is blown up beneath a wheel.
