NASA says it has succeeded in deflecting an asteroid in a historic test of humanity's ability to stop an incoming cosmic object from devastating life on Earth. The fridge-sized Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) impactor deliberately smashed into the moonlet asteroid Dimorphos on September 26, pushing it into a smaller, faster orbit around its big brother Didymos, says NASA chief Bill Nelson in a press conference from Washington. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory announced on Tuesday that an asteroid could pass extremely close to Earth next month, much closer than the Moon.

New research published in PLOS One shows the koala bear population is in decline--and it's because of humans. According to CNN, a number of human-driven stressors are depressing koalas' immune systems, making them more susceptible to disease. Human encroachment, or farming land previously occupied by koalas, is a major factor. So is climate change, which is robbing the landscape of water and trees. CNN reports climate change is also contributing to the intensity of widespread bushfires in Australia, as seen in the record-breaking blazes of 2019 and 2020. World Wide Fund for Nature - Australia is trying to double koala numbers-- in part by planting seeds to grow more trees that grow koala food.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered multiple drop-off locations for mail-in ballots across closed. CNN reports that the move has caused fears that President Donald Trump and Republicans want to suppress the vote in Texas. On Thursday, Abbott limited drop-off points for mail-in ballots to one site per county. The move seems likely to disproportionately affect minority voters in a troubling echo of racially motivated voter suppression tactics of the past. Abbott argued that his declaration was vital to ensuring the security of the vote.
