  • Traffic Robots Rolled Out on Shenzhen to Make Travel Faster

Traffic can be a pain, and is certainly one of the most annoying things about driving in a big city. It can get so bad that people are late to work and productivity goes down. That's why China rolled out 'lane robots' in the city of Shenzhen in a bid to relieve traffic congestion. Remote controls are used to move the central lane barrier automatically, redirecting traffic flow and allowing more space on alternating sides of the highway as needed. Local media reported the 'lane bots' have increased traffic flow by 12.1 percent. The bots operate between 7:30 and 9:30 AM local time, the peak time for morning rush hour in the working week as people hurry on their way to work. The robots look like regular road barriers and appear to be very simple to manufacture and control. It's not exactly clear where the controllers are located, but they are keeping their eyes on the road to monitor changing conditions at all times. Who knew that such a simple technology could have such a big impact on coordinating the flow of traffic? It looks like robots will continue to play a bigger role in society and make our lives easier.

  • Cutting-Edge Virtual Reality Lets Russian Troops Trade Tanks for Tech

Virtual reality is becoming the hot new technology trend. VR allows users to enter a new world by putting on a helmet and headphones. It's rapid development and many potential applications has caused the Russian military to take notice and start a VR soldier training program of its own. The Russian Defence Ministry tested new virtual reality combat simulators in Ryazan on Wednesday, designed to prepare the Russian Armed Forces for modern warfare and to train their skills on heavy military vehicles and weapons without actually having to use them. Soldiers participanting in the simulation were equipped with a set of nine sensors, a data transmission system, a virtual reality helmet and high-tech simulator rifles. The simulation takes soldiers through an urban battlefield and puts them in many different challenging and unusual situations. This simulation is only the beginning, they will only become more realistic from here on out. What do you think about training soldiers with virtual reality?

  • Scientists Develop New Universal Blood Substitute

Scientists from the Russian city of Obninsk have developed a life-saving new blood substitute called "Krunidon", which has the potential to substitute any blood type, regardless of the rhesus factor. Blood transfusions can be complicated because some people's body reject blood from certain types, and not all blood types are always available on hand to help people in need. Scientists say Krunidon is completely free from infections typically found in human donor blood and can be used as a transfusion for any blood type. The substitute is capable of carrying oxygen to tissues and stimulating blood formation in case of blood loss or reduction of blood supply. The new substitute is going to be used in military medicine and is highly demanded by the Russian Ministry of Defence. The medicine is currently being tested according to the rigorous requirements of the Russian military and may become the standard by the end of 2017. Of course, Krunidon has many potential life-saving civilian applications as well.
