COVID-19: New stringent measures spark 'social rebellion' in French Caribbean

Description

Compulsory vaccination has touched a nerve in Guadeloupe and Martinique, leading to growing civil unrest that has included gunfire targeting police. Dr. Nathalie Mrgudovic, Academic & French Overseas Territories Specialist, joins France 24 amid the violent protests in the French Caribbean to offer insight on what exactly is sparking this "social outburst," as described by Dr. Mrgudovic. "The opposition to this policy of forced vaccination without enough explanation can explain that, on the surface," she points out. "However, we have to go really further down to the deeply rooted causes for this social rebellion." The cost of living is very high, explains Dr. Mrgudovic, as is the unemployment rate. "So the unrest, actually, really emerged from that."
