The House of Dior turns over vast sums of money for luxury giant LVMH, but high-end fashion can never be just about the cash: it's also about world-leading artistry. In her spring-summer 2023 collection, Dior's artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri pays homage to the elegant modernity of the Black Parisian jazz stars of the 1920s, in particular Joséphine Baker. Meanwhile, fashion historian and curator Olivier Saillard celebrates the humble wardrobe of his late mother by transforming it with haute couture techniques.
This season's Haute couture shows would ordinarily be taking place in Paris; this year they're everywhere and nowhere. As the sector goes virtual due to Covid-19, fashion journalist Alice Pfeiffer joins us to talk about some of the strategies the Parisian couture houses are adopting. From Christian Dior's lavish short film directed by Matteo Garrone to Chanel's "phygital" catwalk, labels are showcasing their collections via streaming links and viral videos and hoping their clients will get onboard.
Every year, a fashion house produces between four and ten collections - an endless cycle. How do they keep evolving while remaining loyal to the brand identity? Where do these designers go to seek out original ideas? For 2018, Alexandre Vauthier went back to 1980s cinema. Maxime Simoëns, for Azzaro, returned to the 1970s. Guo Pei summons mythical legends, while Yuima Nakazato assembles recycled materials. Alexis Mabille masters techniques, while Iris Van Herpen drapes fabrics "unconsciously".
