The head of Russia's mercenary group Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said early Wednesday his fighters had taken control of Ukraine's city of Soledar after intense fighting this week, but said some "urban battles" continued. FRANCE 24's Gulliver Cragg reports from Kyiv, Ukraine.
The fate of the Ukrainian city of Soledar was unclear on Wednesday, with Russian mercenary group Wagner claiming control of it while also saying "urban battles" were still being fought. Both sides have said the battle for Soledar, known for its salt mines, has been intense and bloody. Its fall would mark a significant victory for Moscow's forces. Soledar, in the Donetsk region, lies around 10 kilometres from the city of Bakhmut, which Russia has been trying to seize for months.

Russia claimed Friday that its forces captured a fiercely contested salt mining town of Soledar. There has been no immediate confirmation from Ukrainian authorities of the city's fall.
Fighting continues in Soledar as Ukraine denies Russia's claim to have taken control of the city
The Russian mercenary group Wagner claims to have taken control of Bakhmut's city hall and centre.
Smoke rises north of Bakhmut close to Soledar, eastern Ukraine, where heavy fighting is taking place as Russian forces try to capture the town. The defence of the village of Paraskoviivka, located north of Bakhmut, is "very strong", according to a senior sergeant who warns that "there can be an operational encirclement of Bakhmut" if the Russian forces take the village and block the road to the town.
