Italian President Sergio Mattarella said Thursday he had dissolved parliament and early elections would be called, following the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi. "The political situation led to this decision," Mattarella said in a brief televised address, hours after Draghi handed in his resignation in Italy's latest political crisis.

The two new officials leading Italy's Senate and Chamber of Deputies -- far-right politicians Lorenzo Fontana and Ignazio La Russa -- have both been heavily criticised for their conservative and far-right stances.
Senegalese President Macky Sall casts his vote in Fatick, 150km southeast of Dakar, as the country elects its parliament. The election is a test for the president to maintain loyalty, while the opposition hopes the results will force a coalition. Sixty-year-old Sall, who was elected in 2012 for seven years then re-elected in 2019 for another five, has been accused of wanting to break the two-term limit and run again in 2024. IMAGES
