The United States vows to hold Yemen's Huthi rebels accountable for a strike on a bulk carrier that killed two, apparently the first fatalities in the insurgents' attacks on shipping. "We will continue to hold them accountable. We call on governments around the world to do the same," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters. SOUNDBITE
Yemen's Huthi rebels fired three missiles at two ships in the Red Sea, US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby tells reporters, adding, "one missile missed by something like 200km and the other two were shot down by a US Navy destroyer." SOUNDBITE
"This morning, US forces conducted three successful self-defense strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen," US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby tells reporters. "This is the fourth pre-emptive action that the US military has taken in the past week against Houthi missile launchers that were ready to launch attacks," Kirby adds. SOUNDBITE
US President Joe Biden says that US and British military strikes against Yemen's Huthis would continue, because the Iran-backed rebels are still attacking shipping in the Red Sea. "When you say 'working, are they stopping the Huthis?' No. Are they going to continue? Yes," Biden tells reporters at the White House when asked if the strikes were working. SOUNDBITE
The United States puts Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels back on a list of "terrorist" entities due to their repeated attacks against international shipping in the Red Sea. "The Secretary of State announced the designation of the Huthis as a specially designated global terrorist effective February 16th for threatening the security of the United States," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters in a press briefing. Yemen's former defence minister, Major General Mahmud al-Subaihi, and the brother of the ex-president, Major General Nasser Mansur Hadi arrive at Aden airport, along with other prisoners released by the Huthis, following prisoner swap between the rebels and the internationally recognised-government.
