Historic peace deal signed with separatists in Senegal's Casamance region

Description

After three years of talks, a peace deal has been signed between separatists and the national government in Senegal's southern Casamance region. It is hoped that this could bring an end to one of the longest running conflicts on the continent, one in which thousands of people have been killed and displaced since 1982.Elsewhere, the Rwandan government says it has not supported the revived M23 rebel movement in eastern DR Congo, this despite UN experts asserting Kigali provided weapons and uniforms to the group. The Congolese government says it would like the so-called MONUSCO peacekeeping mission to leave the country before the end of 2024. They say their efforts to quell conflicts with the M23 and other armed groups in eastern DR Congo have failed. On Friday, more than 5,000 people attended a mass burial for 10 protesters killed during recent anti-UN demonstrations in the city of Goma.
