Deborah Lyons, the UN secretary-general's special representative on Afghanistan, urges the world to keep money flowing into Afghanistan despite concerns over the Taliban government, warning the country could otherwise suffer a historic breakdown and be set "back for generations." SOUNDBITE
The UN envoy on Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons, tells the Security Council on a video call that the Taliban have carried out reprisal killings since their victory despite their promises of amnesty. "There have been credible allegations of reprisal killings of ANDSF personnel and the detention of officials who worked for previous administrations," she says, referring to the collapsed Western-backed Afghan National Defense and Security Forces. The US remains committed to helping every American who wants to leave Afghanistan and to helping evacuate and relocate Afghans who worked alongside Americans, says Secretary of State Antony Blinken. "Our commitment to them has no deadline." SOUNDBITE
Nasir Ahmad Andisha, the Afghan ambassador to the UN in Geneva, says that the special session of the UN Human Rights Council on Afghanistan must deliver 'a strong message' that 'abuses and violation of human rights law and international humanitarian law undermine world peace and justice and will have consequences'. EU Commission spokesperson Christian Wigand says that the bloc's "first priority is the evacuation of Afghans that have been working for EU member states". SOUNDBITE
