The most troubled Olympics in modern history finally open in Tokyo on Friday, struggling to shake off lingering virus fears after a one-year postponement and a build-up marred by scandal and controversy. FRANCE 24's Sport Editor Simon Harding and James Vassina tells us more.

    Baseball fan Masamitsu Takahashi opened his "izakaya" bar-restaurant in 2013, when Tokyo was chosen to host the 2020 Olympics. Never had he imagined that, eight years later, he would be watching Japan beating the USA in the quarter-final there all alone. Other bars have decided to stay open despite the state of emergency, but Takahashi says he prefers "to avoid the situation deteriorating to the point where there isn't even baseball".

  • Tokyo Olympics sports start with softball game in Fukushima

    A softball game between Japan and Australia in Fukushima, site of the nuclear disaster triggered by the 2011 tsunami, kicked off the sports programme at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday. The event, in a sport returning to the Games for the first time since 2008, took place two days before the opening ceremony for the pandemic-delayed Games.   • Tokyo Olympics: Challenges remain three months before start of games

    Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee President Seiko Hashimoto said on Monday that the committee will decide on rules for limiting spectators in April. The organizing committee is making preparations for thorough coronavirus measures during the summer games, she added. While Japan has not suffered as badly as other nations, the government has struggled to cope with a recent surge in cases and on Friday imposed a third state of emergency on parts of the country just three months before the Olympics are set to open.
