World renown theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking had some choice words for humanity, delivering a warning about climate change and the survival of the human race ahead of this year's edition of the Starmus festival. Stephen Hawking has a rare form of ALS which has paralyzed him over time, only allowing him to communicate using one cheek muscle and a speech generating device.
This man is Pavel Yusov, and he's spent the last five days suspended in water with his body wrapped in a waterproof suit. It's all part of an experiment called 'dry immersion' and the main goal of the project is to find out more about the effects of zero gravity on the human body. Scientists from Moscow's Institute of Medical and Biological Problems measure the physiological effects of microgravity after five days, conductin a full medical examination on the subject, similar to the checkups on cosmonauts and astronauts after they return from space. Even short exposure to microgravity causes the human body to lose muscle tone and decreases the ability to operate in earth gravity, but dry immersion experiments hope to help space travelers overcome these effects.
A team of 7 volunteer 'astronauts' will take part in a simulation of a two-week-long mission to the surfaces of the Moon and Mars near the town of Pila, Poland in a project called the Poland Mars Analogue Simulation 2017, or PMAS 2017. The volunteers will stay inside the simulated space module until August 13, spending the first three days in 'lunar mode' before switching to prepare for the red planet.
Retired NASA astronauts Harrison Shmitt and Buzz Aldrin shared their visions on future space exploration in conversations with American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and former astronaut Charlie Duke at the Starmus Festival at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim on Tuesday.
In a recent opinion article on CNN.com, U.S. President Barack Obama stressed his goal of not only sending humans to Mars, but making it possible for extended stay by 2030.
Blue Origin successfully carried out a test of the escape system of its New Shephard rocket, in the west Texas desert on Wednesday. The spacecraft is intended for use by civilians wishing to travel to the edge of space. The system was devised to bring passengers safely back down to earth if a failure occurs inflight. Blue Origin is set to offer space tourism services by 2018.
