Ukrainian intelligence officials say President Zelenskyy's military has destroyed Russia's 'Triuf' air defence system in what is reportedly the second strike on occupied Crimea in recent days.
Russia's Defense Minister says that the Ukrainian army's resources are "almost exhausted". Speaking at a security conference in the Moscow region, Sergei Shoigu adds that Kyiv is "failing to achieve results," despite the "total support" from Western countries.
Russia on Thursday (April 21) claimed to have taken control of the strategic Ukrainian port of Mariupol after more than seven weeks of fighting that reduced most of the besieged city to rubble. But "the Ukrainians certainly are not admitting it. There has been no announcement from the Ukrainian armed forces or from the government of Mariupol having fallen", says FRANCE 24's Gulliver Cragg.
In the northern Chernigiv region bordering Russia, a brigade of Ukrainian soldiers conduct drills aimed at preparing them for further air strikes. But with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky warning that Russia is likely to increase attacks on the country's energy infrastructure ahead of the winter, one general worries that Kyiv needs more advanced anti-missile systems to prevent civilian suffering.
