Convention on endangered species: African countries sue EU over failure to protect hippos

Description

Over the last decade, the global hippo population has declined by as much as 50 percent. Much of this due to illegal hunting for meat and ivory. Despite this, the European Union plans to oppose a motion to ban the global trade of hippo products. In response, experts from 10 African countries are urging the EU commission to change its position. FRANCE 24's Sam Bradpiece tells us more.

  • Manatee Found With 'TRUMP' Literally Carved Into Its Back

    Over the weekend, Florida residents discovered a shocking case of the mutilation of an endangered species. According to Gizmodo, someone carved the name of President Donald Trump on the back of a manatee. The manatee was found on the Homosassa River located near the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, which sits near the Gulf Coast north of Tampa. Photos and videos show the name 'TRUMP' clearly etched on the back of the animal. Federal and Florida laws prohibit harming manatees. Trump has weakened the Endangered Species Act that protects manatees and other wildlife facing extinction

  • Seeking A Better Life, 140 Migrants Drown Off Coast Of Senegal

    In the deadliest shipwreck recorded in 2020, at least 140 migrants have drowned off the coast of Senegal. The UN's International Organization for Migration says the boat was bound for Spain's Canary Islands. It was carrying about 200 people. CNN reports the vessel caught fire a few hours after departing Mbour. It eventually capsized near Saint-Louis, on the Senegalese northwest coast. The IOM is deeply saddened by this recent tragedy, which follows four shipwrecks recorded in the Central Mediterranean last week and another in the English Channel. Statement, United Nations International Organization for Migration CNN reports the Senegalese government and the IOM will travel to Saint-Louis to assess the needs of survivors and provide immediate assistance.
