Washington (USA), Oct 13 (EFE / EPA) .- (CAMERA: Michel Reynolds) Hundreds of climate activists gathered in front of the White House to ask US President Joe Biden to declare a climate emergency and stop all new fossil fuel projects.
Ghanaian environmental activist Chibeze Ezekiel has won recognition for steering his nation away from coal, the most polluting fossil fuel, and campaigning for clean energy as a pathway to development. Africa needs more funding to build the "technology to develop renewable or clean energy," he says, a demand echoed by developing countries at the COP27 climate summit in Egypt's seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
Activists target TotalEnergies headquarters in Paris's business district of La Défense, pouring paint on the entrance to denounce the group's record results and "climate-damaging" activities. In a year marked by major fuel price increases, the group posted a record $20.5 billion net profit. IMAGES
Scores of climate activists have taken over the village of Lüzerath in western Germany. The original inhabitants were expropriated, but the activists want to stop an open-air mining company from digging up brown coal on the site. A judge has given police permission to expel them from the 10th of January. But the young people say they are fighting for the future of the planet and have no intention of moving.
COP27 has been extended by a day, as delegates struggle to wrangle a final deal. With just hours left of the conference, here are the key takeaways from the second week.
