Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed "in principle" to UN and International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) involvement in the evacuation of civilians from a besieged steel plant in Ukraine's southern city of Mariupol, the United Nations said on Tuesday.
Ukraine said a new attempt was under way on Friday (May 6) to evacuate scores of civilians trapped in a heavily bombed steel works in the city of Mariupol, after bloody fighting with Russian forces thwarted efforts to bring them to safety the previous day. FRANCE 24's Nadia Massih tells us more.
Russia is retreating rapidly from Kyiv and Chernihiv in the north as they change tactics, said Ukrainian presidential advisor Mykhailo Podolyak, who warned they would redeploy troops in the east. Meanwhile, the Red Cross said they would try once again to get to the besieged port city of Mariupol.View on euronews
The Red Cross said it hoped to lead an evacuation of thousands of civilians from Mariupol on Friday but needed concrete agreements on where fleeing residents would be escorted to. The ICRC said its vehicles would lead the convoy out of the city, which has been under intense Russian bombardment, but said it was not yet certain that the operation could go ahead.
The Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, which is surrounded by Russian troops, said it will restart efforts to evacuate civilians Sunday, after earlier efforts were scuppered by ceasefire violations.
