Closed since 11 July for a 10-day routine maintenance, Europeans fear that Moscow won't turn the tap back on Thursday 21 July. In previous weeks, Russia had already cut 60% of its gas deliveries via the pipeline. The 1,224-kilometre (760-mile) long Nord Stream 1 is a system of twin pipelines running under the Baltic Sea, stretching from Russia's Vyborg to Lubmin in northeastern Germany. In Luxembourg, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner says it is not yet possible for the EU to cut Russian gas imports as a sanction against Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. SOUNDBITE
EU commission chief Ursula von der Leyen says that Europe could survive Russia's squeeze on gas supplies to the EU thanks to an unprecedented diversification of sources in recent weeks. "Our models show, with all the measures we have taken, that we are now on the safe side for this winter," Von der Leyen told a session of European Parliament in the eastern French city of Strasbourg. Belgian prosecutors have opened a probe into Russian "interference" in the European Parliament following allegations lawmakers were paid to spread Kremlin propaganda, Belgium Prime Minister Alexander De Croo says. "Our judicial authorities have now confirmed this interference is subject to prosecution," De Croo said. "The cash payments did not take place in Belgium, but the interference does. As Belgium is the seat of the EU institutions, we have a responsibility to uphold every citizen's right to a free and safe vote." SOUNDBITE
