Russia's war on Ukraine: General prosecutor of Ukraine opens sexual assault investigation

Description

Céline Bardet, International Jurist and Founder of the NGO "We are Not Weapons of War," joins FRANCE 24 following "first-hand reports of Russian soldiers raping Ukrainian women. A Ukrainian MP has publicly made the accusation," explains FRANCE 24's Mark Owen. "And she's publicly quoted the case of a young woman raped in eastern Kyiv in front of her child" right after her husband was shot dead. Ms. Bardet points out that sexual assault is very prevalent when there's armed conflict. "We have seen that so many times before," she says. "We have warned about that since the beginning" of the war in Ukraine. Her NGO is deploying a team to "provide [rape victims] the assistance they need," but she acknowledges the stark challenges they face: "It's difficult to access [the area] in this [war] zone, it's difficult to know what is happening, and it's difficult to reach out to the victims."
