As Shanghai expands Covid-19 lockdown, life on hold in city of 26 million

China's commercial hub of Shanghai ground to halt on Friday after the government locked down most of the city's 26 million residents to stop the spread of Covid-19, even as official numbers put local cases falling for the second day in a row.

  • Another 100 Million Doses Of COVID-19 Vaccine Bought By US Government

    The US government has ordered another 100 million doses of Moderna's coronavirus vaccine. This brings the total number of vaccines ordered to 200 million, says Business Insider. If the vaccine receives emergency-use authorization from the FDA, Moderna plans to deliver. The delivery will be for 20 million doses by the end of December with the rest over the start of 2021. The US still has the option to purchase another 300 million doses from Moderna. Everyone who wants the vaccine should be able to get one, timing is the main concern.

    More than 74 million Americans--and those they live with--are at increased risk for severe COVID-19. An analysis published Monday by JAMA Internal Medicine reveals those 74 million are classified as 'essential workers' in the US. Researchers say the workers' risk is based on disease risk guidelines developed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. UPI reports that of the more than 157 million workers across the country, 72% are in jobs deemed essential by the US Department of Homeland Security. What's more, UPI reports over three-fourths of all essential workers are unable to work at home.
