A belated Valentine's Day for giant pandas at the San Diego Zoo as Bai Yun and Gao Gao have their first mating encounter. Sharon Reich reports.
A Rothschild giraffe calf weighing 57 kilos and measuring 1.75 m tall is on display at the Amnéville zoo where she was born on 28 September 2020. The species is one of the most endangered distinct populations of giraffe on the planet.
After five futile attempts at impregnating Huan Huan, a female panda loaned to French zoo Beauval by China, her enthusiastic but ineffective partner Yuan Zi has had to step aside. Huan Huan has now been artificially inseminated, leaving Yuan Zi, who "does not have enough experience yet" according to the head vet at the zoo, to hope for better next time round.
France's Beauval Zoo is celebrating the birth of its first baby giraffe. Named Kimia, she is already 1.60m tall and weighs 56 kg. She becomes the 6th member of a group of reticulated giraffes to which her mother Baya belongs. The species is "critically endangered" according to the IUCN Red List.
Giant twin pandas Fu Feng and Fu Ban enjoyed their second birthday celebrations at the Schonbrunn Zoo in Vienna on Tuesday. The sibling bears received a number of birthday gifts, including boxes of potatoes, carrots and special bamboo shoots.
