Britain set out steps on Tuesday (May 17) to try to break the deadlock with the European Union on trade with Northern Ireland, lining up a new law that would effectively override parts of a Brexit deal and further inflame ties with Brussels. FRANCE 24's Armen Gerogian tells us more.
London insists the planned legislation would not break international law.
Enter the twilight of the world's longest reign. The 96-year old Queen of England missing what is arguably the highlight of any British monarch's calendar, the reading of the government's parliamentary program instead delivered by her son the crown prince. The importance is mostly symbolic, after all the Queen's Speech is written by the prime minister. However the optics of the exercise beget the question: what United Kingdom will Charles inherit?
London says the deal is "not tenable" in its current form and Northern Irish unionists are refusing to take part in a power-sharing administration unless it is scrapped.
