With no signs of the worst European migrant crisis since World War Two letting up, it's up to European leaders to find a promising resolution to the dire situation. Gavino Garay reports.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hails the EU parliament's adoption of a contentious asylum policy reform as a "huge achievement for Europe". The parliament's main political groups overcame opposition from far-right and far-left parties to pass the new migration and asylum pact -- a sweeping reform nearly a decade in the making. SOUNDBITE
The leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union, together with the prime ministers of Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein and several representatives of the European institutions, pose for a photo to mark the 30th anniversary of the European Economic Area (EEA). More than 400 million European voters will choose a new five-year EU parliament between June 6 and 9 next year, announces the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. "Every person, in every member state, will go to vote" she says, "your vote matters". Elections in the EU's 27 member states will decide the make-up of the roughly 700-seat assembly, charged with overseeing European legislation. SOUNDBITE
Josep Borrell, the EU foreign policy chief, holds a speech in Bruges to inaugurate the European Diplomatic Academy. "Europe is a garden," he says, praising the "combination of political freedom, economic prosperity and social cohesion". He urges European leaders, whom he compares to "gardeners", to help prevent the invasion of the "jungle". SOUNDBITE
