‘Instilling terror’: Women in Zimbabwe allege rape by security forces

Description

Political crisis continues in Zimbabwe in the wake of street protests in mid-January that were violently repressed by security forces. Seventeen people were killed and around 1,500 were arrested, in a crackdown that has tarnished the image of the country’s president, Emmerson Mnangagwa. More people are now speaking up about abuses they allegedly suffered at the hands of the security forces, including dozens of women who say they were raped by men in uniform. The government has blamed the violence on rogue elements and says it can only handle rape accusations that have been reported officially to police. France 24’s Stefan Carstens and Caroline Dumay report from Harare.
