    On Sunday, Pope Francis urged European leaders to help 49 migrants currently stuck on two humanitarian rescue ships on the Mediterranean and give them a safe port to dock. In an address to 60,000 people in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope said, "I make a heartfelt appeal to European leaders to show concrete solidarity for these people. They were only seeking a safe port where they can disembark." According to Reuters, over two two dozen humanitarian groups, including Amnesty International, have called on the European Union to offer a safe port to both vessels.

  • Italy Allows Docking of Ship With Migrants, Ends Standoff With Malta

    According to Reuters, Italy will let its coast guard ship carrying 177 migrants it rescued, to dock in Sicily, ending a standoff with Malta over where it should disembark. The European Commission also said it was working on a solution to share out of the migrants aboard the Diciotti with Italy’s EU partners. Over Twitter, Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli said that “The Diciotti ship will dock in Catania." and that said that "Now Europe must hurry to do its part" in helping to share the burden of the arrivals.

  • Malta Lets Rescue Ship Dock After EU States Agree to Take Migrants

    According to Reuters, Malta said on Tuesday it would allow the Mediterranean rescue ship Aquarius, to dock after five European Union countries agreed to take in 141 migrants on board. The boat, run by the SOS Mediterranee and Doctors without Borders (MSF), had been at the center of the latest continent-wide controversy over how to cope with the arrival of seaborne migrants. The migrants, rescued off the coast of Libya, will be distributed among France, Germany, Luxembourg, Portugal and Spain.

  • Stranded Migrants Face 4 Day Journey To Spain

    Hundreds of migrants stranded on a rescue ship in the Mediterranean could face four more days at sea as Italy works to transfer the "already exhausted" people to Spain, charity Doctors Without Borders warned on Tuesday. According to CNN, The Aquarius, which is carrying 629 migrants who were pulled out of the sea by rescuers over the weekend, was left stranded between Malta and the Italian island of Sicily after Italy's hardline interior minister and leader of the anti-immigration League party refused to allow it to dock. On Monday, Spain said it would allow the ship, which is carrying more than 120 unaccompanied minors and six pregnant women, to dock in Valencia.
