Temperature reaches over 120 degrees Fahrenheit in Shymkent, Kazakhstan over the weekend - enough to make anyone scramble for cover. The weather was so hot that one man decided to have his breakfast al fresco, and scramble his eggs in the sun after the abnormal warmth heated the pan enough to cook with.
Firefighters from the ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation), Brazil's federal protected areas agency, use helicopters and make firebreaks to combat a blaze in the Amazon rainforest. Nearly 3,000 forest fires were registered in the Brazilian Amazon in February 2024, the highest for any February since records began in 1999, and made more likely by climate change, according to experts. People walk on the Puerta del Sol, a public square, in Madrid where the temperature is nearing 40 degrees Celsius, as Spain issues hot weather red alerts for three regions due to the "extreme" danger posed by scorching temperatures. Weather agency Aemet said temperatures would hit highs between 38 degrees Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) and 42 degrees across much of the drought-stricken country. The Federal Reserve has raised the key US interest rate again and says more hikes are coming as it battles soaring prices -- an aggressive stance that has raised fears of a recession.
