Spain’s Angela Ponce Becomes First Trans Woman to Compete for Miss Universe

Description

According to SF Gate, Angela Ponce will become the first trans woman to compete in the Miss Universe pageant. Ms. Ponce will be representing Spain in the iconic pageant. Her inclusion comes five years after trans women were first permitted to participate in the competition. Ponce shared her excitement on Instagram saying “My goal is to be a spokesperson for a message of inclusion, respect, and diversity not only for the LGBTQ+ community but also for the entire world.” Miss Universe opened the doors to trans women after Canadian Jenna Talackova was barred from competing for her country’s Miss Universe spot since she was trans. Her dismissal led to protests from thousands of fans, who petitioned then-Miss Universe owner Donald Trump to allow trans women to compete. Trump agreed to the request, and the ban was lifted in 2013.

Miss USA, Sarah Rose Summers, did make it to the finals -- but only just, and was eliminated before voting got down to the last 10. Last week, Summers sparked an online backlash when she posted a video commenting on the English-language abilities of two contestants. In a live Instagram video -- denounced as "condescending" and "xenophobic" -- the 24-year-old said Miss Vietnam H'Hen Nie is "so cute and she pretends to know so much English and then you ask her a question after having a whole conversation with her and she (nods and smiles)."

  • Miss USA Is Re-branding Post-Trump

If you watched the Miss USA competition last weekend, you probably noticed some changes. In the 65-year run of the show, a Black scientist won the crown for the very first time. The other finalist was a feminist, Indian-American immigrant, not the show's status quo. But it's an attempt at moving forward after a scandal with the show's previous owner, Donald Trump. According to Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe organization, "We’re so much better than we were before," Trump had control over the pageant for nearly 20 years, and it took 38 years for a woman of color to win Miss USA. Some contestants hope this year will dismantle many of the stereotypes, while others are unsure if feminism belongs where the high heels and bikinis roam. But it is a step in the right direction.
