The Volvo XC40 Recharge is everything customers expect from a Volvo, with the addition of a state-of-the-art, fully electric all-wheel-drive powertrain that offers a range of more than 400km (249 miles) on a single charge and output of 408hp. The battery charges to 80 per cent of its capacity in 40 minutes on a fast-charger system.The Android-powered infotainment system is fully integrated with Volvo On Call, the company's digital connected services platform. Via Volvo On Call, plug-in hybrid drivers can track how much time they spend driving on electric power.

The new system offers full integration of Android Automotive OS, Google’s open-source Android platform, with real-time updates to services such as Google Maps, Google Assistant and automotive apps created by the global developer community.

That same year, it expects 50 per cent of its global sales to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids. Customer demand for the XC40 Recharge has been strong and while order books remain open, every car scheduled to be built this calendar year has already been sold. The first cars are scheduled to be delivered to customers in Europe later this month. The start of customer car production follows a period of preparation in which the Ghent plant has built a limited number of pre-production cars. This process, standard procedure for every new model, aims to optimise the production flow and ensure top-notch quality of every car built. All relevant production staff has also received extensive training on safely building electric cars.

Sometimes less is really more: Volvo's first all-electric model, the Volvo XC40 Electric Drive (BEV), proves that the Swedish premium brand's vehicles can be made even better by omitting certain things. The rise of electric cars is the biggest change in the history of the automobile. For the first time in over a century, vehicles move without a gasoline or diesel engine working in the engine compartment; instead there is a battery in the vehicle floor. This essentially changes the car. Also for tailpipes or a large radiator grille, there is no need. And because the internal combustion engine is eliminated, additional storage space is created under the front hood.
Volvo Cars is integrating and testing a new wireless charging technology in a live city environment together with selected partners, evaluating its potential for future electric cars. Over a three-year period, a small fleet of fully electric Volvo XC40 Recharge cars will be used as taxis by Cabonline, the largest taxi operator in the Nordic region, and charged wirelessly at stations in Gothenburg, Sweden. The wireless charging test is one of many projects outlined within the strategic initiative Gothenburg Green City Zone, under which designated areas within the city are used as live testbeds for the development of sustainable technologies.
Electric cars are quiet, clean and dynamic - but do they offer the same level of safety as a classic four-wheel drive vehicle on a slippery road surface? The Volvo XC40 is perfect for answering this question. With the premium compact SUV, the customer can choose between a wide variety of engines and drive concepts: combustion, mild and plug-in hybrids as well as a fully electric version, front-wheel drive, mechanical all-wheel drive and, with the Pure Electric model, all-wheel drive by means of electric motors on the front and rear axles. The Volvo XC40 is the latest addition to the model range and has risen from scratch to number two in the brand's internal sales ranking. It combines typical SUV advantages such as a raised seating position and good space with an attractive lifestyle appearance, high functionality - and a versatile range of drives. The series underlines its pioneering role in the field of electrification: The Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 AWD is the brand's first fully electric model.
